Accessible travel in South Africa
Gotta love SA. Everyone should get to. This hub brings together everything we know about travelling in South Africa with a disability, with a long-term health condition, or with someone who has one.
How we write about access
- Facts, not labels. We describe what is there: steps, slopes, door widths, toilets, noise and light, instead of calling a place "accessible".
- Checked and dated. Access details come from a visit, from the venue in writing, or from a traveller who has been. Every access box shows when it was last checked.
- Honest about gaps. If we have not checked something, we say "not yet checked".
Before you book
- Use our access questions checklist when you contact places to stay, tours and restaurants.
- Ask for answers by email or WhatsApp, and keep them.
- Book airline and airport assistance through your airline when you book your flights, and confirm it again before you travel.
- Read our visas and ETA guide, including the note about the live selfie and facial recognition.
While you are travelling
- Save the emergency numbers, and make a plan if you cannot make voice calls.
- Download offline maps: signal can drop in reserves and mountains. See mobile data and SIM cards.
- Keep medicines in your hand luggage with a copy of your prescription.
